New Product: Japanese New Year Traditions

In keeping with the time of year we would like to introduce three new items that we have put for sale at the entrance to the Ichiba (right at the Landing Spot) that are part of the traditional Japanese New Year (正月, shōgatsu) Celebrations.

In Japan, in the Shinto belief system, coming up to the New Year is a time to clean house, prepare osechi foods. This is to help greet the Toshigami (年神) or the year-spirit.

The first item we have available is the Shimenawa (標縄), a traditional braided rope made of rice straw. It signifies ritual purification in the Shinto religion. Often they are adorned with Shide (紙垂), a zig-zag shaped paper streamer, which you can see on the above picture. Place this above the main door to your dwelling, to keep away evil spirits and to show the presence of the Toshigami. Our version can be re-sized to fit the space above your front door.

The other two items are kadomatsu (門松) - literally "gate pine". These are placed in pairs in front of a dwelling to welcome the kami (神), or ancestral spirits of the harvest. We have them available in two sizes.
